Curtis Mathes Color Console Model H2508ME
The first on in this article is the Curtis Mathes Color Console Model H2508ME Chassis C85-1 (RCA picture tube mode 25VGTP22), which was made from 1975 to 1983. This was the oldest in this group of three. This large console was also the most expensive of the group. The television was under a ton of heavy things, on the bottom and near the door of the shed. I was fearful she would be dead, but she is still very much alive. I even had to clean out a huge mouse nest from her chassis and she still was in operational condition.
All the Rescued Curtis Mathes Televisions Work Well
One thing I can tell you for my experience with these television is that Curtis Mathes made a very rugged and dependable television during this era. Any electrical device that can make it through over ten years of brutal temperature extremes, and steamy hot Tennessee weather and ice cold Tennessee wet winters is a well-built device. So far all the Curtis Mathes televisions I have rescued from these sheds have work supremely well.
Playing Shows on These Magical TVs Gives Me Great Joy
Playing shows on these magical televisions gives me great joy and happiness; it takes me back to a much happier time. I just hook up a VCR to the back of the television and away I go to the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, when there were video stores and I had a house full of children, and life was fun and full of wonder. These televisions were someone’s pride and joy back in those days. The full broadcasting of analog television ended in February 17, 2009 for most of the world. It was before and around this time that I began saving these lovely televisions from landfills. Not to be rude but sometimes people can be so gullible and foolish. These beautiful consoles and portable television could have received digital broadcasting if they had a modulator attached. But no, the public started the move to the next big thing, the analog televisions were taken to landfills along with the VHS tapes and players, and LP records. When I think of all the beautiful consoles and players that were destroyed during that time period, it makes me very sad.
I Worked for Curtis Mathes Back in the 1980s
I worked for Curtis Mathes back in the 1980s in the console design department. They really put a lot of detail in their models. We worked diligently with the products we had at our disposal. Many of our circuit boards came for Japan, and we also used RCA picture tubes, what some would call clones. The RCA picture tube mode 25VGTP22 is an example of the quality of our picture tubes in the early 1980s. By the mid 1980s, we had moved to the more reliable Hitachi A66ABU30X Picture tube.
Curtis Mathes was to try to make the Cabinet lighter and more Durable
One of the most important parts of cabinet design at Curtis Mathes was to try to make the cabinet lighter and more durable. Curtis Mathes used plastic and fiberglass imitation wood laminate on the bumper and attached caster wheels to the larger consoles to help in moving them. Detailed cabinet front designs also used many types of laminate to make a more durable cabinet design.
Curtis Mathes vs. Zenith and RCA
Being a television manufacturer in Texas put Curtis Mathes at odds with Zenith and RCA. For one thing, it was the only southern manufacturer of televisions. Later, when Philips bought out Magnavox, there were Magnavox plants in Tennessee, but Curtis Mathes had a Texas spin on their televisions: They were large consoles and Curtis Mathes sold most of their merchandise at their own showrooms, where they even rented out VHS tapes. The company also preferred to do their own repairs on their televisions and stereos.
The 4 Major Texas Manufacturing Centers for Curtis Mathes Electronics
Back during the 1980s, there were four major manufacturing centers for Curtis Mathes Electronics in Texas. One was in Athens, Texas; the second was in Dallas, Texas; the third was in Houston, Texas; and the fourth was in Austin, Texas. Many of the plant centers had been in operating back to the Mathes Cooler Fan days. But the largest and most modern was the Texas-size plant in Athens, Texas.

It has a very nice CRT and had been a daily player for almost 30 years. I know that RCA and JVC sometimes made Curtis Mathes CRTs for the company after 1980. This model has an amazing Hitachi A66ABU30X Picture Tube, no longer in stock and they sold for $506.07 back when they did have them.
